Pensioner Member
Our Pensioner page provides information for retired members of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
Pension Payment
When you retire you will receive notification showing how your pension benefits have been calculated. Your pension is paid monthly in arrears, on the 15th of each month. If the 15th is a Saturday or Sunday, the pension will be paid on the previous Friday.
Pension payments can only be paid direct to your bank or building society account. To download a bank mandate form, visit the LGPS Library.
Death Grant
If a pensioner dies before the age of 75, a death grant may be payable. If the member retired before 1 April 2009, and died within five years, a lump sum of five times the annual pension is applicable, less the amount of pension already paid. If the member retired after 1 April 2009, and died within 10 years, a lump sum of 10 times the annual pension, less the amount of pension already paid, is payable. No death grant is payable if a pensioner dies after the age of 75.
You may nominate whoever you wish to receive any death grant which may be payable; we will follow your wishes wherever possible. You can make a nomination by completing a Nomination of Beneficiary of Death Gratuity form. To download a nomination form, visit the LGPS Library.
Payslips
From April 2010, payslips will no longer be sent on a monthly basis. However, they will be issued under the following circumstances:
- In April to confirm the increase to your pension if applicable
- In May to show details of your new regular pension amount
- When there is a change of £0.50 or more to the net amount
- When there are changes to your tax code, affecting your net amount.
This will result in a considerable cost saving for the Pension Fund.
Pensions Increase
In order to ensure that your pension keeps pace with the cost of living, your pension is increased annually from the first Monday after 6 April. The rate of increase is set by the Government and is based on the rise in the Retail Prices Index for the year to the previous September.
Pensions increase is only payable if you have attained age 55 or if you retired early on the grounds of ill health. View the latest Pensions Increase.
Tax
A P60 will be sent to you in April each year which will show the amount of pension and tax deducted during the income tax year. It is up to you to ensure that the tax code being operated against your pension is correct. If not, any query on the tax coding should be sent, quoting your National Insurance Number, to:
